Pilates Health and Fitness Studio

Established in 2003, the Pilates Health and Fitness Studio is the only dedicated Pilates studio in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

Four fully-qualified Pilates instructors provide Pilates instruction to suit all ages and fitness levels.

About Pilates

The Pilates system was created by Joseph Pilates, a gymnast born in Germany. He designed a system of exercises during the First World War to improve the rehabilitation for many returning veterans. He recommended a few precise movements emphasizing control and form to aid injured soldiers in regaining their health by strengthening, stretching, and stabilizing key muscles. Pilates created "The Pilates Principles" to condition the entire body: proper alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing, and flowing movement.

Over the years, the fundamental Pilates exercises have evolved, providing a wealth of exercises to help strengthen and mobilise the human body. Different pieces of equipment can be used and at the Pilates Studio, Scarborough, we use Stabilising Balls, Bands, Weights and Rollers to assist or increase the complexity of a movement.

Types of class

Pure Pilates (PP) - Floor-based Pilates occasionally using equipment. Suitable from beginner level upwards. All ages and levels of fitness welcome.

Ball Pilates (BP) - Using the 52” Stability Balls, creates a challenging workout using the Pilates technique. Suitable for beginners upwards.

Post Natal Pilates (PO)* - Strengthening the pelvic floor and abdominal wall is crucial after giving birth. Post Natal Pilates allows you workout whilst your baby lies next to you. Suitable for babies up to crawling age.

Pre Natal Pilates* - Pilates can benefit pregnant mums by maintaining pelvic floor strength, help maintain some of the strength in the core abdominal muscles and also gently mobilise joints and muscles in the rest of the body. Suitable from 12 weeks onwards.

* Pregnant mums can attend any of the Pure Pilates classes, as the exercises will be adapted to suit.

Pure/Ball Pilates (PP/PB) - Alternating each week, to either a Pure Pilates or a Ball Pilates class. Other equipment is also used.

Beginners Pilates (BEG) - If you feel more comfortable starting a class with absolute beginners, then this is the class for you.
